Hypnospace Outlaw is a unique detective game set inside a fictional 90s-era internet service. As an Enforcer, you browse various 'zones' created by users, looking for content violations like copyright infringement or harassment. The game perfectly captures the aesthetic of the early web—GeoCities pages, obnoxious GIFs, and MIDI music—while weaving a complex mystery about the corporations behind the tech. It's a deep, hilarious, and often moving journey through a digital past that never was.

Our Expert Score

91/100

Hypnospace Outlaw is a bizarre, brilliant, and incredibly detailed time capsule. Even if you weren't around for the GeoCities era of the web, the game does such a good job of world-building that you'll feel a strange sense of nostalgia for its clunky, colorful pages. It’s hilarious—the writing perfectly lampoons everything from early internet subcultures to corporate buzzwords.

But beyond the jokes, there’s a real, compelling mystery here. Digging through someone's digital 'home' to find proof of a crime feels genuinely voyeuristic and investigative. The mobile port handles the 'mouse and keyboard' interface surprisingly well with touch. It’s a dense, slow-burn experience that rewards curiosity like few other games. A true indie masterpiece.

Incredible game

I remember seeing this game when it was on preorder and I thought it looked so cool. Playing the game I realized that cool was only the start to describe this. The opening alone made me realize how much effort would have been put into this game and going through the different pages is really fun. I can tell that this game was made from such an appreciation for the early years of the internet. And I like how it’s not super easy to find the flagged content, making it where paying attention and taking your time to read actually helps with finding info. Definitely recommend to the people who like games similar to Home Safety Hotline or to feel that 90’s nostalgia.

Greatest Game

This is my favorite game of all time! I first played it back in 2021 but I still think about it at least once a month. The characters are endearing and the music is really memorable (especially the Hot Dad tracks!) So far this has been an excellent port. I’m beyond excited I can now play it again anywhere at any time. The only negative I can think of is that it can be hard to recognize what can be clicked in a page, as you don’t get the feature of hovering a mouse pointer over page elements to find links when you play via touchscreen. This makes the game a little more difficult here compared to other platforms.

The GOAT on Mobile!

This is one of my favorite games of all time! An alternate universe take on 90’s internet filled with laughs, tears, intrigue, and the overhanging melancholy of a bygone era. If you’re on the fence about this game, just go listen to the MASSIVE ost, it’s one of the best soundtracks for a game out there. To me, this game is beyond just a mere “simulator” game. It’s more like a classic point and click adventure with a very convincing emulation of old 90’s PCs and early internet personal webpages (like GeoCities and Angelfire), but with a dreamlike sci-fi twist. Give it a try, but be prepared to read a lot. This game is chockfull of reading material. It’s worth it though, as you gain insight and even grow attached to certain HypnOS users through out the game. Very charming and endearing how well they emulated the early internets innocent nature as well as its seedier sides. Overall, this is a premium package I come back to at least once a year on PC, now I can take this gem with me in the go~

I absolutely love this game and have been playing it on my computer for a long time, but since there's no Chinese version, I run into some reading difficulties during play - the text is quite extensive and the font makes it hard for non-native speakers to read... I really enjoy this game and want to keep playing it regularly, so I hope the developers consider translating it…!🥺

Really creative

This game is really creative and pleasant. It works very well on mobile and tablet (which is the first place I've heard of it) and is a breath of fresh air among games on mobile devices. I can tell a lot of love went into this game. The premise is unique and it really captures that "anything is possible" feel of the internet I grew up with. I'm really excited to continue exploring it, it's very immersive. Great job devs, what a beautiful game!

Highly recommend it!

This is such an underrated gem, get this if you want a solid puzzle-ish game or just want to explore the early internet again (or for the first time). This is now the third time I’ve bought this game and will be the fourth time I’ve played through it. It’s a shame hypii doesn’t have the text to speech voice, but the don’t starve style instrument voice is a nice replacement.

Amazing game, really fun and full of nooks and crannies to explore

Really such a. Great game and hoping to see more from these devs. It’s so unique and such a good detective game, some of the puzzles here are really mind boggling but when you finally get it and it all clicks its so euphoric, really such a great game and I recommend to anyone who likes immersive games/deduction games/just fans of 90s internet, really captures that vibe super well

Fantastic game

In the genre of TR-84 and Her Story (without live action). A wonderfully deep world and a satire of every online community I’ve ever been part of. My minor feedback is that the devs may have committed too hard to the music (you’ll understand) because I had to mute it, and music draws me into a game.
