Step into the shoes of an 18th-century detective in The Case of the Golden Idol. Explore frozen-in-time crime scenes and gather 'words'—names, objects, and actions—to fill in your scrolls. You must piece together not just who died, but why, and how they are all connected to a mysterious, cursed idol. With its unique art style and deep, challenging logic puzzles, it’s a narrative experience unlike any other.

Our Expert Score

95/100

The Case of the Golden Idol is a masterpiece of the detective genre. It avoids the common 'pixel hunting' of most point-and-click games and instead focuses entirely on logical deduction. The game presents you with frozen scenes of gruesome deaths, and you have to identify every person and motive by collecting nouns and verbs from the environment.

The art style is grotesque and weirdly beautiful, fitting the dark, 18th-century conspiracy perfectly. What’s most impressive is how the game respects your intelligence; it never gives you the answer. When you finally click the names and events into place and the game confirms your theory is correct, the 'aha!' moment is more satisfying than almost any other puzzle game I've played. This is a must-play for fans of Return of the Obra Dinn.

Great deduction game

I am so glad that there is now a standalone version of this app. I played through when it was on Netflix games and missed being able to step back in when it left that service. The graphics have a distinctive style that I don’t totally love but they work and oddly fit the narrative. Some of the deduction puzzles are very difficult and I only. Passed by trying a few things but I remember being frustrated very infrequently. The answers actually make sense and you do get the information needed to solve everything. Great on mobile because you can pick it up and put it down quickly or take time with it.

Witty, observational writing and a hands-off approach to deduction elevate this excellent period murder-mystery to a singular work.
