User experience optimization
Sword x Staff is a breath of fresh air for RPG fans who find themselves torn between wanting deep, complex progression and not having the time to commit to heavy MMO grinding. Boltray Games coins this the 'Third Way RPG,' and it functions brilliantly. By combining the hands-off convenience of an idle game with the exploration and social scale of a classic JRPG, the game offers a rich fantasy experience that doesn't feel like a second full-time job.
The depth of the build customization is where the title truly shines. With over 300 distinct skills to collect, combine, and modify, character progression never feels locked to a single linear path. You can genuinely experiment with tactical variations to conquer tough boss fights or optimize your efficiency. Combined with a massive open map spanning five beautifully realized kingdoms and incredibly generous server launch rewards (including a massive 500 pulls package), this title sets a high bar for mobile RPG design.
Innovative 'Third Way RPG' combining idle ease with MMO depth
Vast world consisting of five unique kingdoms to discover
Over 300 skills allowing fully customizable character builds
Generous rewards including up to 500 free pulls for early players
Progression in Sword x Staff is heavily linked to exploration. During your first week, make it a priority to clear all server launch and first-week missions to claim your 500 free pulls. Use these pulls to secure high-tier skill cards. Because you can mix and match over 300 skills across classes, always experiment with high-sustain builds for offline grinding to maximize your returns.
The core gameplay involves exploring a vast fantasy map, experimenting with endless combination builds using a library of 300+ skills, and tackling dungeons with friends. Combat lets choices take center stage, while the integrated idle loop ensures your hero gains experience, resources, and rare equipment while you sleep.
The game takes place in the vast and beautiful fantasy world of Kanstein, which features five distinct kingdoms.
I’ve played a few games like this before but I like how it is going so far. Some people might not like the slow gameplay but I think it’s great! It gives other people a chance to catch up to the p2w users and others who have much time on their hands. Though I do feel as though more cosmetics should be able to be earned rather than bought and more customization for the character, profile banner, house, guild buildings and other stuff would make it feel more like your own experience, rather than everyone being the same and or similar. Overall great game so far you guys are doing great!
My honest review is to download another game. I’m always paying to win every game that I play this game in particular I have quite a bit invested in it. I would say more than probably 90% of the players you irrigated at every turn you have to wait everything‘s on a timer everything is held up by your gear ranking they make it so you’re not able to buy and or you’re not even able to farm for the part you need they want a waiting game to get additional XP which it seems like it’s gonna take days if not a week to get anywhere in the game. I’m pretty far but I’m literally hit a dead end my best advice for for you to save your time because time is the only thing we cannot get back. Don’t waste your time here. Don’t spend your money here. It’s just another endless gotcha trap with gates that force you to stop you can’t play. It’s just not fun and then it says you could swap between sword and staff easily. They’re lying they make it so that way you can’t do it based on the gear you have to re-get all the gear on the other character. And on top of that when it skins the stuff that you have on your primary character doesn’t go on your secondary character which it should cause it’s the same character you’re just swapping to one stance or the other, which is I think it’s pretty stupid cause I paid all this money and I get this. I got the sword skin, but it won’t work on the staff so there’s that as well so they don’t know what they’re doing here. Find another game to play.
Downloaded it yesterday on launch and I’m genuinely impressed. The “Third Way RPG” idea actually works really well — it blends idle progression, strategy, and open-world exploration without feeling like another generic auto-battler. I like that progress keeps going even when I’m not playing, but the active parts are solid too: the map is fun to explore, and you’ve got real freedom to experiment with builds and skills instead of being forced into one meta. The world of Kanstein looks colorful and the Sword & Staff companions are a nice touch. It’s relaxed enough for short sessions but has enough depth to keep me coming back. Easily one of the more interesting mobile RPGs I’ve tried lately. Definitely worth downloading if you want something chill but with actual substance.
I’ll start off with a TL;DR: It has potential but also a lot of flaws (mentioned below). Not any single one huge flaw but a bunch of tiny ones that add up. Feel free to give it a try but don’t go in expecting the best possible AFK game ever. I may or may not continue playing this and may update this review. So as usual, I didn’t like the tutorial and forced hand guiding but at least it was quick-ish, only took maybe 2-3 minutes. I guess for new people to this genre of games, it’s necessary, but there should really be a skip tutorial option… Anyway back to the actual review I’m writing as I’m playing: The good: - Some character customization - x2 speed and auto battle - Teleportation to where you were before - No super long rest times so far The bad: - The story seems a bit iffy at best. Completely irrelevant and terrible at worst. I barely got any taste of the story, if there is any, before getting thrown into tutorial. - There is no way to tell how powerful the enemy is for now at level 5 at least. Like I went into a battle and got crushed and subjected to another mini tutorial. Partially my fault for not powering up beforehand but still…I feel like maybe that was half a plot kill. - You have to navigate to the home screen to power up equipment. You can equip new equipment but for some reason can’t power it up? Which seems a bit dumb but maybe there’s reasons I don’t know for it? - The option to go home looks like a back arrow and not a separate home button. The neutral (could be good or bad depending on your view): - Cartoonish looking characters - Auto-track quests, but doesn’t automatically move your character. - Includes quite a bit of different elements from different RPG’s: It’s like it wants to be a bit of everything but doesn’t do any one element spectacularly. - Feels a bit lacking in content so far but it’s new so there’s definitely room for improvement.
I’ve been having quite the time in this game already, and have been enjoying the benefits of the pre-reg as well as the amenities like server chat. That being said, I can tell that this is going to be one of those games where you either spend money on every aspect of the game or your progress is slowed to a crawl—not to mention the gacha system and FOMO for time-vaulted items and cosmetics—but hey, that’s the time we live in unfortunately, and they have to make money somehow.
Life’s too busy for me to sit down and game anymore. So mobile games have been my go to for a while. It’s a simple rpg. Nice music. Explore maps, kill mobs, loot, all in a very convenient click to walk adventure. Of course there are afk rewards to help you keep up. At the end of the day when family is in bed I turn this on, upgrade, adventure some. Maybe dungeon with a group, then go to bed. And I’m enjoying it.
I love the Grind and the chill environment you feel when playing the game. You actually feel like you can progress without stressing over whether you can reach a stage or not. Just take the time to invest in this game and help other players to grow with you. I thought the creators of this game are kind for implementing this system into the game. Can’t wait to continue playing and see what’s in store for it.
This game does not show server name on the login page. I created my character almost the same second as my friend, but we end up in different servers so we can’t add friend in the game. Moreover, I cannot transfer to my friend’s server with my existing character. The most ridiculous part is I can’t delete my character and I cannot use current ID to create a new character on my friend’s server. I waited for an hour to talk to a customer representative while there was only 8 people ahead of me. The customer service representative was not helpful at all, the one hour was wasted.
