The Tower is an incremental tower defense game that puts you in control of a single tower. Defend against endless waves of enemies by choosing tactical upgrades during battle, and use your hard-earned coins to buy permanent power-ups in the workshop. With deep research trees, unlockable cards, and a massive variety of stats to optimize, the game offers a rich strategic experience that evolves the longer you play.

Our Expert Score

95/100

The Tower is arguably one of the most addictive incremental games on the App Store right now. Unlike traditional tower defense games where you manage a whole army of towers, here you focus on just one. This singular focus makes the progression feel incredibly personal. You start as a weak, tiny tower and slowly transform into an impenetrable fortress through thousands of upgrades. The 'Workshop' serves as the permanent progression hub, where you spend coins earned in runs to ensure your next attempt goes just a little bit further.

The strategic depth is immense. Between the active gameplay of choosing upgrades during a wave and the idle 'Research Labs' that run in the background, there is always something to optimize. The recent 'Fleets' update adds even more late-game content with new enemy types like Commanders, ensuring that even veteran players have new challenges to face. It hits that perfect 'just one more run' loop that defines the best of the genre. If you enjoy seeing numbers go up and watching your strategies pay off over weeks of play, this is the gold standard.

Only being honest here ……Ok so Progression is extremely slow. As a free to play player prepare to watch many ads to get gems. I’m here for that aspect of the game although pay to win is not necessarily the goal we know you have to make money so the option is technically there. However the Lab time it takes to upgrade certain aspects of the game take astronomically long periods of time without GEMS which cost money/offerwall/ads/events I just started 2-3 days ago and to upgrade game speed from 3 to 3.5 takes 1 day 10 hours or spend 60 gems. I can wait that long don’t get me wrong but it makes me wonder about game speed 10 and how many diamonds that’ll cost then bc if it says I have to wait 11 days and 500 diamonds I’ll most likely lose interest and drop the game before I watch that many ads. Sure the lab time reduction is an option to upgrade but what a crazy grind with slow reward and im sure it won’t be the only statistic that takes eons to upgrade either. MAJOR COMPLAINT There’s no clan or guilds at all just a tournament every so many days… I’ll mention there’s not even world boss to work towards with dps/wave completion rewards. I can’t even get my group of friends to play this game bc it’s not multiplayer at all. This game has MAD potential but honestly I feel a bit let down compared to what it could be. Hope it gets reworked guys sorry to be so critical for now it’s a 3.5 for me. Will round to 4 bc I have hope gg 👍

Great game, though having a problem…

Games pretty good and straight forword. Lots of ads but honestly, I could tell the game filled my ADD desire of something to do during dead moments in my job. So i paid the measly $10 to support them and bypass that. It is grindy. But thats the point in this game. Its a time killer clicker when you only have 5-10 min. The game saves your run if you exit the app on the last wave of enemies you did. Its constant supply of mechanics keep small things and investments churning with every small amount you gather. The only thing from me that is keeping this 4 stars is i have a bug. If im connected to the internet in wifi, when i load into the game. It only shows a black screen. If i go to my quick iphone tab, disable wifi momentarily on bootup, then turn it back on once i get to the main screen. It reconnects and using wifi and not my data and works properly. Unsure whats causing this. But its not that much of an issue as im still able to get in and play. Just would be nice if this didn’t hapoen. Will change to 5 stars if this small thing is fixed. Never wrote a review. But this game is worth it for fitting my needs in what i was searching for. $10. Worth it for ad removal. Recommend that at least.

Helpful info

I have played this game for over a year now and I have a few pros in the beginning and cons at the end. This game is a really cool strategy games and involves thinking and math. the developers of this Game constantly contribute helpful info and updates and makes the game feel alive and is really cool. A big plus for me is when there is no ads and you have a choice for an add for a reward (I find this one of my favourite things about the tower) There are of course things that I will say that you will have to be ready for though. If you are a busy person this game can in the start be pretty non time consuming, but later along the line you will have games leading up to 12 + hours a round. Now most of the time I split that into a few days. Another thing is that there are a few things that are unfair when it comes to buying in game purchases and when you are a non spender it could feel a little demotivating ( of course that is that cuz how else the game game make money. If you arnt afraid to make purchases this is the game for you. This game has also tested me on my math skills when playing with upgrades and checking out new strategies. And don’t be afraid to ask the community question like on discord cuz they will in no time. Overall this is a great game and I will continue playing it for how knows how long. Enjoy !!

Great core game, absolutely terrible microtransactions

This was a roller coaster of emotions. This game is a very simple yet engrossing one. I came across it on an ad and gave it a shot. Being a fan of popular TD games like BTD, I was expecting something similar and was given something even better. The upgrades seem small and minute but many play off one-another and overtime a massive difference is felt. The problem is the inability to make use of many of the core mechanics because of monetization. I would gladly pay 7-10$ for a finished game that simply requires me to play to progress. But claiming to be a free game then stating “well you can progress normally for free, but spending money will speed it up significantly” feels like a stab in the back. Literally every upgrade/card/ultimate is locked behind insane grinding time, or simply spending money. And it’s not some small amount of money either. 20-30$. That micro transaction is literally the amount I’d spend on a fully finished and developed indie game. Not for some gems in an mobile game. Not to mention the “events” are literally, not figuratively, just another 20-30$ micro transaction for “limited time resources”. Even just ads are okay, since you make your money and I only have to sit through 30s but being strong armed to spend exuberant amounts of money for a “free” experience just ruins it. I’m always sad to see a great idea like this ruined by greed or a bad business practice. This really is a great game, just executed absolutely terribly. I really hoped this would stack against games like BTD6 but wow was I let down.

Slow

Played very much for about 7 days. The game is pretty much a tease. Looks aesthetically pleasing, but the entire game is basically spent waiting just so you can start waiting more. You just wait, and wait, and wait, and wait. Then get an “upgrade” that increases the amount of time you have to wait. Then wait longer, longer, and longer. Keep waiting so you can “upgrade” again to a new, longer wait time… The “upgrades” are barely a noticeable affect on gameplay. you wait hours or days for something unnoticeable. The entire gameplay consists of waiting to click a button that will have barely noticeable affect on what is happening. Keep hoping that you will unlock something useful, but never useful enough. There is nothing to win, just keep waiting to unlock something that barely helps you a noticeable amount. Made it to a new round? Your reward is start from the beginning again. Wait. You should just rename the game “Waiting” its a shame because the game has great potential. but the mechanics are painfully slow. Perhaps you could build some type of mode that allows the game to continue playing while the app is closed, allowing you to “farm” resources and then when you come back to play you can collect them and use them to actually experience a meaningful impact on the gameplay, not the same monotonous boring grind and sour un noticeable “upgrade” reward system.

I enjoy it, but I’ve had my run ended twice.

I’ve enjoyed the game a fair bit, got probably close to a couple dozen hours in it. My biggest problem right now are how it’s kicked me twice from two very long runs. The first was understandable, it kicked me because I “played less than ten rounds the last time I was on.” I’m assuming this is to prevent save scumming in order to get better rng, so fair enough. The other reason that just happened was because “I opened that round more than 10 times”. Or in other words, I opened the game, played a bit, and closed it more than 10 times in a round. This one I do not understand at all, as games can go for 1000’s of waves, and take several hours to get there. I’d be able to stomach both of these more if there was any kind of warning before hand, but now I’m really disheartened because what if there is another rule I’m unaware of that’s gonna kick me at wave 2000??? Edit: making an update here. I lowered my review from 4 stars to 2 stars as random resets are still an issue. I started on wave 29 last night, played until wave 41 just because I wanted to play a few minutes before bed, and I wake up this morning to see that not only did it scrap my run, but it also forgot to do my research that I set it to do last night. It’s done this before but I would’ve assumed it would be fine considering I had the game open for more than 5 minutes.

Game breakdown.

If you start playing this game, I highly recommend reading their Discord to learn how to play because if not, you will not progress at all. It’s also where you can find out how to do certain strategies. Overall, this is a very enjoyable game for the first year. At first, you play tournaments, finish events, and progress, but when you start reaching a higher tier and higher tournament league, you basically have to spend money on the game to progress unless you are okay with staying in one spot for a while. Maybe if there were more players, it wouldn’t be an issue, but the majority of endgame players have just spent thousands of dollars to get to where they are, and it’s impossible to surpass them. My friend has played this game for almost three years without spending any money on it, and he is still in platinum league tournaments, barely making it to the top 13 in champion tournaments. You are basically stuck when you get to platinum league tournaments if you don’t spend money. Maybe two years ago, it wasn’t an issue, but they’ve added so many updates that it will literally take years to get to a satisfying point , and that’s not even endgame. Also, when you start getting better at the game, your runs will take 5-10 hours, including wave skip and wave acceleration. I do not recommend playing this game while your phone is charging or if you are in a hot car. There is a chance your battery will start rapidly draining. So overall, if you just want to build a tower to see how cool it can get and you are okay with slowly progressing and never really reaching the top tier until maybe 5-8 years later, I recommend this game.

Continue to disappoint

Quit the game once. Came back because the game had possibilities. Was playing there two week challenge and was set up for the final tournament to get the necessary points to get a large amount of rewards. But the tournament said that I couldn’t join in unless I updated the game. Went to the App Store to update the game in the App Store, said that the game was not updated. I contacted Support in regards to this. Initially, Gwen blamed me. Saying that it was my fault that I couldn’t update the game. Missed out on the rewards. Tried several times throughout that day to update, but it never reached the App Store and the game never allowed me to play the tournament. Responded how frustrated I was at this. Gwen came back on saying that it is not their fault that they supplied the update and the App Store didn’t put it on. Yesterday, I played the tournament again. No update had ever occurred, but it allowed me to play the tournament. Today, an update shows up as I was getting ready to type this. Tells me that there was a coding error on their end, not my fault, not the App Store‘s fault, but their fault. I don’t appreciate being lied to. I don’t appreciate businesses that won’t take accountability for their mistakes. I will quit supporting the game by quitting playing. I don’t think they care. They get their money from the routine player who will ignore their lies and mistakes. As for me, I will never ever recommend their games. Being The Tower or any other game that they create. They’ve lost my respect and my patronage.
