It’s been a while, sorry for not doing any updates lately!
This one fixes some minor UI issues on newer devices.
Have fun!
Subwords is a refreshing spin on the saturated word puzzle genre that feels like a cross between a crossword and a jigsaw puzzle. Instead of hunting for individual letters, you’re piecing together fragments of words based on a specific theme. It’s surprisingly challenging because your brain has to shift from looking for 'cat' to looking for 'cat-' and '-egory'. This layer of complexity keeps it from feeling like just another generic word search.
The UI is exceptionally clean and minimalist, which fits the 'zen' vibe of the gameplay. I particularly enjoyed the variety of categories; they aren't just 'Animals' or 'Fruits', but often include more obscure and interesting trivia-based topics. While it can occasionally feel repetitive in long sessions, it's the perfect 'waiting for the bus' game. It's thoughtful, educational in a light way, and polished enough to stand out in a very crowded market.

Look for fragments that end in common suffixes like '-ing' or '-tion' and work backward. Pay close attention to the category title, as it often contains clues for the longer, more complex words in the grid.
Select syllables or fragments in the correct sequence to form words that fit the level's theme. Once a word is correctly identified, its fragments disappear from the grid until the board is clear.
Yes, if you get stuck, you can use hints to highlight a fragment that belongs to a valid word.
there's a HUGE range of topics, which is always appreciated, but i can really tell how much thought was put into the creation and accessibility of the game. i was having a lot of trouble with the font, and they had enough foresight to add the dyslexic font and high contrast setting, something that many apps don't take the time to do. another thing i love is the range of languages. i'm multilingual and i've surprisingly taken to using this app as some fun casual practice for other languages, and i would LOVE to see their selection of languages continue to expand. i would also love to see some color theme options that you can unlock with stars? just another customization option that can let users choose fun color palettes :)
I really enjoy this game and would love more levels! But some of the color schemes are so hard to read, I would love the option to either choose a specific color scheme, or turn on a colorblind mode to have better contrast. I am not colorblind but I really struggled to see the letters in some of the levels, especially the darkest colors in Greek mythology and presidents Overall an amazing game that is fun and definitely has replay ability. It’s easy to get the hang of, and it’s not very high stakes to just play against your personal best. It’s a game that doesn’t require luck, just a little knowledge and practice. I am generally hesitant to play games that I have to buy first, but this one was absolutely worth it! I’m only interested in casual and fun games because I’m always busy and don’t want to devote hours to my screen. This game is perfect for that because you can just play one level for a few minutes at a time. Absolutely amazing game!!
I like this game a lot! I just lost 1 1/2 hours to it when I meant to play for 15 minutes. One reviewer said this is a trivia game. I will agree, but many of the words can be found by eliminating the ones you know first. Of course if you slept through chemistry and geography (and life), I guess you’re screwed. Try another game. My only complaint is that there are levels locked that I really wish I could bypass, like the Solo Artists category; I listen to Alternative (all years), Classical, and Classic Rock. Since many of the names are from Pop Singers, this one took me several replays until the same names came up again such that I could remember them. (I will forget them tomorrow; I since I don’t listen Pop except for crossover songs, like Twenty One Pilots, Muse, and Nothing But Thieves. And, yes, I know I am a snob.) BUT, even this complaint doesn’t stop me. Since you can try each level again (and again if necessary), you should be good. I would classify this as a trivia/word/challenging/fun/addictive game.
It’s not obvious in the photos and videos, but each level is randomly generated from a large word list, making it fun to play levels over and over again. Controls are simple and intuitive, and there’s no unnecessary limitations (e.g., you can re-arrange letter tiles manually). I highly recommend grabbing this game!
I just bought this game. I like the look of the game, the mechanics, the sound effects, and the many categories to choose from. So why only 4 stars? Because you have to continuously choose either “Classic” or “Timed” after every completed game. Seems like this is a preference that one should be able to set in “settings” as in other games with similar options. As someone who never plays timed games, it would be nice to be able to play through each game without having to choose “Classic” over and over and over again.
This is much more of a trivia game then a word game. There are levels that are just outright impossible, ie: looking at forty bubbles that all contain two letters and being expected to construct ‘Video game characters’ from it. Other levels like the presidents was more realistic and far more fun. I find I do not do the majority of the ‘Timed’ challenges unless I have some familiarity of the subject, otherwise they simply can’t be done. Thankfully developer doesn’t require all levels to be finished to move on. Just pushing to do better each try will earn stars to keep moving on. Side note to the reviewer claiming to have finished the game with a perfect score.... BS you didn’t do it. Compliments to the developer for keeping their response generic with that Phony. I’ll be interested to see what the next evolution of the game is. There a some fun ideas, but you quickly can outgrow them and then your left with half the categories you know nothing about (see ‘Solo Artists’ for a good example)
There's not much I can say about this game other than I love it. It helps that everyone can play. It's accessible with the native IOS screen reader, so even visually impaired people can play. But even people with full use of their sight should give this game a chance.
I am enjoying learning the game. It be a challenge. However, there seems to be a bug I’ve encountered in the iPad version. I am not getting a response fairly often when touching various word fragments during timed play. It’s a especially frustrating because the slow reaction means it limits your score. Disappointing. I hope it gets fixed.
