Kingdomino is one of those board games that is 'easy to learn, impossible to master,' and this digital port captures that perfectly. The transition to mobile is seamless; the drag-and-drop mechanics for the tiles are snappy, and the visual feedback for where you can and cannot place a tile is very helpful. I’ve played the physical game many times, and this version is actually faster because it handles all the score counting for you!
The online matchmaking is solid, but I find myself spending most of my time in the solo mode against the AI. The higher difficulty levels are actually quite smart and will actively hate-draft tiles they know you need. It’s a great 'coffee break' game—a full match takes less than 10 minutes, but it provides a satisfying amount of strategic crunch. My only wish is for more expansions to be added in the future, like 'Age of Giants,' but the base game is already fantastic.
Official digital adaptation of the physical board game
1-4 player local and online multiplayer
Challenging AI for solo practice
Multiple grid sizes (5x5 and 7x7)
Beautifully animated 2D graphics
Choose a tile from the current draft. The tile you pick determines your turn order for the next round. Place the tile in your 5x5 grid, making sure at least one side matches a terrain already in your kingdom.
Points are calculated by multiplying the number of connected squares of the same terrain by the number of crowns in that territory. Plan ahead to create large territories with multiple crowns to win!
The value of the tile you selected in the current round.
My physical copy of Kingdomino has been one of my favorite board games in my collection for years. So far, I’m really satisfied with this digital edition! I’m happy that this game is a one time purchase with no ads, and that all of the in-app purchases are aesthetic
There are two big problems with this app. First: the default 3D view is attractive, but anti-functional from a gameplay perspective; when trying to place a domino you’re as likely to rotate the board - needlessly - as you are to actually place the domino, which can even obscure the visibility to legal placements late game. If you toggle to 2D mode, you are presented with a board that does not move or resize, and some of the large, unhidable interface buttons will obscure places you want to play your domino. Second, while there are $50 worth of unnecessary cosmetics you can buy, the ability to implement bonus scoring rules is needlessly locked behind “rewards” which are earned by “magic dominoes” which are built by getting virtual currency for playing the game, repeatedly, without the cool scoring options that make it interesting. You also have to know that in the rewards screen, the book icons are the only ones that give you these rules, a fact which is not documented anywhere in the app or its official information publications. Frankly I expected better; this is an app that focuses on presentation, very much to the detriment of gameplay.
The confirm button needs to be moved to the top of the screen. Several times I am trying to place the domino at the bottom of my kingdom in a certain spot and inadvertently press the confirm buttton when I am trying to arrange the domino. Since there is no undo (which would be great to have if the domino choice hasn’t been made), this has led to some frustrating moments.
Giving this 5 stars cause honestly the implementation is great! However, I think the DLC content is pretty steep for what it is - just “skins.” If they are going to make the excuse for DLC it needs to actually be gameplay additions (fyi I’d love to see a true solitaire mode).
Serious kudos for the dev team that took an amazing game and nailed digitizing it. Superb UI, sounds, graphics and effects. I haven’t loved a digital game edition this much since carcassonne a decade ago. For those who don’t already know Kingdomino, it deservedly won awards. Insane snag for $3, recommend getting the physical game too! It is a simple game that is well balanced and the true challenge is your opponent. Get this if you like: Carcassonne, Santorini, or Sushi Go!
Good game but HORRIBLE multi-player. When playing with friends online in different areas, the game will kick them out automatically when they close the app and put in a bot. No other board game app does this. This app needs to fix its multi-player so people can join their friends games and not be kicked out for closing the app to do their stuff. Please fix this.
Updating my rating to five stars following updates including a replay button.
The graphics are great, but there is no way to save the game. It is impossible to play a private game with a friend unless perhaps you both have time to play a full game. Otherwise it deletes your game every time you have to take a break or leave the game. So frustrating.
