Great news - now you can create and publish 10 projects on your free Hopscotch accounts! Try out a tutorial on the “Learn” tab or explore some games in the community and add your own twist to remix them.
If you have any questions/comments/feedback, please email us at help@gethopscotch.com.
As always, happy Hopscotching!
Hopscotch: Coding for Kids is brilliant because it removes the syntax errors that usually frustrate new coders. By using blocks, kids can focus on the *logic* of programming—loops, conditionals, and variables—rather than worrying about missing a semicolon. The UI is friendly, but the engine underneath is powerful enough to create genuine physics-based games.
The real magic is the community feed. Being able to 'peek inside' a game someone else made, see their code, and even remix it is the best way to learn. It fosters a collaborative environment where kids teach each other. It’s not just an app; it’s a gateway into computer science that feels like a toy.
Full creative coding suite
Social community to share projects
In-depth video tutorials
Cross-device project syncing
Add a character to your project and open the 'Code' editor. Drag blocks like 'When Game Starts' and 'Move 100' into the window. Hit 'Play' to see your character come to life. You just programmed your first movement!
Use advanced blocks like 'Variables' and 'Conditionals' to create complex gameplay. You can code a scoring system, physics for jumping, or even enemy AI, all within the Hopscotch editor.
Yes, you can publish your projects to the Hopscotch community for anyone in the world to play and enjoy.
This app was my first step into the coding world when I was young! I love hopscotch and it truly has encouraged me to learn other coding languages and get involved with programming. I can confidently say that hopscotch not only teaches you about coding, but it teaches kids problem solving, applying math and logic skills, perseverance, patience and so much more. I always loved spending summer days coding games and then being able to publish these games for other kids to play! This is definitely a great app for kids of all ages and all coding skill levels. Wether or not your child wants to be a professional game developer, this app will benefit them in so many ways and teach them so many important skills. As for the people who dislike the subscription, you can still use hopscotch for free! The subscription is optional and gives you access to more features, but there is still a fully functional free version. Personally, I think the subscription was worth it and purchasing one helps support the team behind this amazing app!
I tend to have at least 3 hours a day on this app. I love the fact there aren’t too many tutorials and that it encourages people to figure it out themselves. There are so many great tools such as variables, “check once if,” and music. Although this app has so many options to create pretty much any game you would want, there is one problem… the reason I downloaded this app in the first place. The shark tank interview. As said in the demonstration, kids were encouraged to make money, through seeds, but instead, kids are only losing money. (If they want the subscription.) I know that the old system will not be added, but I would ask that you would take into consideration adding a comment section to each game. This would help kids to learn by having others give suggestions on how to improve. This would also allow a sense of community to develop around a developer or their game. Two more things, the ability to see the version history of a published game and a sequel system to create direct sequels to a past game you’ve created. So that’s pretty much it. I hope that you guys at least take one of these things into consideration and turn my 4 star review into 5 stars once again. Thanks for reading!
I’m a bit conflicted about Hopscotch. I do have fond memories spending hours coding and making games, but I don’t really like how it is now. The “Newest” tab isn’t the way it used to be. It only shows select things and that makes me wonder how smaller game makers are supposed to get noticed? I have been featured a few times now, but when I was first starting out it made me really happy to just have one person like it. I really liked Hopscotch, but I just wish that the tabs could go back to the way they used to be. The chance that my project might never be seen doesn’t make me feel motivated enough to start coding. I am also disappointed that you have to sign up for a free trial, or as a student or teacher. This new way of signing up for the app is really confusing, and my friend just decided not to get it. I think that the app should just start off being free, and if the user really wants the premium features they could choose to subscribe. Edit: So I have been on Hopscotch some more and I now really miss old hopscotch. The new tabs are terrible. They make me physically nauseous. Only the projects that already get likes will ever be seen. It seems almost impossible to get featured. Why do I even try.
When I first downloaded the app was like a year ago and it still has the subscription but a few things were free like I got to create and publish games and customize my avatar but now everything needs a SUBSCRIPTION! like seriously now I can’t change my avatar now I can’t create or publish games. I can’t do anything. The only thing I could do is play other peoples games who are more fortunate than me to get a subscription. I don’t really like this new version. I like the old one better where you didn’t have to pay for every single thing. I mean, I think it’s just horrible that you can’t even create games that is so horrible what’s the point of playing a coding app when you can’t even code? And I’ve seen the reviews and all the responses are I’m sorry, but we need this to pay the bills and stuff. Well I’m pretty sure that you were paying the bills just fine last time all I’m saying is not every kid is fortunate, but can you just please lower the prices just a littleAnd the only reason I’m rating it three stars is because I understand not every game can be free and the old version was pretty cool
So I decided to go without the premium and it’s still pretty good actually you can do so much codes and stuff it’s awesome even though I don’t have a membership still you can still do lots and lots and lots of stuff you have to download this app it’s the best ever and plus if you sign in it’s absolutely free and I just really really really need you to download it because it’s the best ever I’ve never found any fun apps before I’ve been searching for a long time and well most of them after five seconds you just get off and then you’re done but this app you stay on it for a while and it’ll be so fun it’s not just one of those quick five seconds oh that was boring done. It’s one of those or you could just play forever ♾ And never get bored because they’re so so so so so much you can do even without the membership that cost money and I don’t care if you have a membership or don’t I just want you to download the app because it’s the best
I know this is a great app and I have many old memories, ranging from when I created a melody that sounded like Bank Account before the song came out to making and looking at some of the cool projects from the community. I can remember this app vividly, and confirm it was a great app. However, I wish this app was still free, because it is great and everybody should get a chance to experience it. But I understand that the greatest things come at a price, so I still give it a perfect 5 star rating. I am lucky I had an old account and could get it back for free. My current thoughts on the app are that it is doing well, and has no actual competition, because Scratch has never actually received a mobile app, and all the other coding apps give no actual codes to kids, and just let you make characters “Walk” or “Jump”. Thank you for making the greatest mobile app, maybe of all time!!!
I’m 17 and I still enjoy making games on this app. I have some experience with actual languages like python and swift, but it is so much easier to pick up my phone and make a game using block coding. I wish there were more features and functionality in the language, but it is still the most advanced block coding language I have ever used. It is pretty obvious that the level of complexity possible on hopscotch is limited based on the bugs and quirkiness that exist even in the best hopscotch games. This, however, seems to be a flaw of block coding languages in general as a trade off for ease of use. Also, I wish that there was a recent tab where you could see levels that were just uploaded without a filter. This would give small creators more exposure and feedback on their games. But overall, it’s really good for a free app.
This is an amazing app and I am learning a lot from it. If you in anyway hesitant about downloading it.... DON’T BE! If you wanna make games and have fun while coding. This is the app for you!!!!! This is especially great for kids because some games that involve learning bore kids, even if they DO want to learn. But this app lets kids learn so much and still have fun. There is a woman who guides you through each already made game. And then once you have gotten the hang of it you have the choice to go on your own and make your own games from scratch. I love this app, if you are interested tap that install button. There is nothing to lose! If you don’t feel comfortable or don’t feel like this is your vibe, you can always delete the app(which I doubt you would want to do). But overall this is an amazing. I totally recommend it!
