With stunning 3D graphics, a cinematic story, and a cast of unique companions, players will forge a path across the stars.

Our Expert Score

95/100

Honkai: Star Rail is a masterclass in how to bring a high-budget console experience to mobile devices. As a spiritual successor to Genshin Impact, it swaps real-time action for a refined turn-based combat system that is much deeper than it initially appears. The strategy lies in 'Breaking' enemy weaknesses and managing your Skill Points (SP) efficiently across a four-person team. The animations for the 'Ultimate' attacks are genuinely breathtaking, rivaling high-end anime productions.

Beyond the combat, the writing is sharp, funny, and surprisingly emotional. The 'Trailblazer' (the player character) has a distinct personality that breaks the 'silent protagonist' trope, often offering sarcastic dialogue choices. The world-building across the different planets—from the frozen tundra of Jarilo-VI to the high-tech Xianzhou Luofu—is immersive and detailed. While it is a gacha game, the sheer amount of free content and the quality of the 'free' characters make it accessible to everyone.

Rewarding and Timeless

This game may have its issues with powercreep, but I'm pretty sure it will stay playable for f2p, seeing as a large portion of the player base prefers saving money, or simply keeping the challenge. I'm hoping that isn't compromised anytime soon. Regardless, HSR is my favorite gacha game I've played (I played the other 2 big dogs in the gacha world.) The quests are always either funny, profound, engaging, or comforting. The events are very entertaining and well-thought out, but I must ask you to provide more of them! After finishing an event, I feel dread because I don't want to run out of them so quickly, and it seems that Hoyo is a bit slow on pumping them out. The characters are very much my favorite aspect of the game, with lots of nuance, different motivations, and they're not always fixated on the MC, thus letting each character have its own independent value, with whatever unique role they play. The combat is great, I love being strategic but not being stressed by real-time combat, as my hands and fingers hurt sometimes and don't allow me to react quickly. The game environments are engaging, and I hope Hoyo can put out as many puzzles / chests out as possible, as it's one of the easiest ways for f2p to quickly and mindlessly collect stellar jades, though it does take time to find them. Overall, HSR is so relaxing to play, but interesting and "personal" in a way too. The dialogue is pretty good!

Definitely Worth Trying

We have to keep in mind that this is a f2p game with a very straightforward combat system and it is not without its flaws. With that said, I see a ton of people complain about the difficulty of certain fights and the unlucky outcomes of hours of grinding for level up and ascension materials as well as of course, the rolls to summon new fighters and light cones. I’ve also seen complaints about too much story and not enough gameplay. I don’t disagree with any of these points. HOWEVER, my personal experience with this game in the month since I’ve started playing has made it clear that you can’t please everyone and there are bound to be issues. This is made even more apparent considering how much FUN I’ve had with this game. Between the main story, the development of specific characters and introductions of new ones, the music, the graphics and sound design as well as the combat visuals, I can honestly say I’ve never had a more pleasant experience playing any mobile game. There were times where the story stagnated a little, but getting involved in the events and learning new styles of playing made up for that. And I ABSOLUTELY HATED the boss fight with Phantylia most of all. But I never spent a penny and I eventually strategized well enough to scrape through it despite the challenges. This is all purely objective and long-winded. But I believe this is an excellent game overall and I don’t regret picking it up. I will continue to support this game for as long as it stays consistent.

Wow definitely deserves a 5 star rating

So I have played a few Hoyo games and the most recent of their games that I have played is Genshin Impact. Now I have played a few turn based games in my life and this one has really amazed me. Now all of the things that HKSR has put into their game is absolutely fantastic. I have to say that not only this team listen to their community but they go above and beyond what they should have to do for this game. Starting with a free 10 pulls every patch but not just that, but also a great story, interesting characters, and long lasting content. I do believe that these devs have made quality of life changes into this game that not only I wish was in Genshin Impact, but it almost make me mad playing Genshin, because the content, and quality of life is soo good in HKSR. The fact that you are not limited to farming and leveling up your characters to specific days like in Genshin makes the enjoyment of this game skyrocket. I also think that the story is absolutely amazing. The way that the playable characters in the game are the ones that are involved in the story of the game also feels much more immersive compared to Genshin’s npc #280 that we don’t care about this game puts the playable characters at the forefront of the games story. Also the simulated universe, and memory of chaos is amazing place to test out fun team comps and test your accounts strength. Lastly the standard banner characters are quite good compared to Genshin’s lackluster 5 star roster.

I honestly never thought I would be playing this game for this long

Firstly I’m not a turn based rpg person every time I try a turn base game I instantly get turned off by it even when I say ok ima give this one a try I just couldn’t past 3 days with them but this game is different it ligit has everything others don’t i was being told by friend everyday ‘yo bro you need to play this game’ and I always decline playing this game until one day I broke and played it that was one of the greatest decisions of my life one this game graphics is so different than other turn based game the game play is different it’s like all other turn based game is created by the same company with the same reused graphics and pixelated characters in battle the only other turn based that I actually spent a little extra time on was Distyle and that game only lasted me 3 days as I said above earlier, also this game isn’t one of the cash grab games where if you spend you can be above everyone and you flow through the game with ease but this game spending ligit makes the boring and unplayable I started this game with it in my mind that this is gonna be the same as all the others and it blow me out of the water Rn I’m sitting at a Trailblazer Level 60 completely F2P and I didn’t had to spend a dime for anyone who doesn’t like turn base games I would tell you consider trying this one trust me as a once fellow turn base hater you will love this one and I’m really looking forward to to seeing more of the master piece of a turn based game in the future.

Amazing Game!

First, I’d love to start of by saying that the game is turned based and does have a lot of mechanics and rules. However, the game is honestly pretty simple to understand as all of the rules are in my opinion, very explained and easy to understand. And even if you do not understand how a character or mechanic works, a lot of times it’s not 100% necessary, so you don’t need to worry too much about understanding it. The game runs very smoothly on my phone (IPhone 12 pro max) despite it being a little outdated. But I’ve never had any performance issues while playing the game or story. When it comes to the story, I wouldn’t be able to tell you if it’s good or not as I am not a story person, so I skipped a majority of the story. However the only part of the game I did not skip through (Penacony) had me pretty captivated, and the characters were pretty well written in my opinion. My favorite part of the game is the rewards. The devs of the game have been extremely generous to the point where I have 12 limited five star characters and I don’t play the game often. And a lot of those characters have been given out for free. I literally have been able to grind 100 pulls in one day, that’s how generous the devs have been. As a person who has played PLENTY of gacha games over her lifetime I’ve gotta say that these devs are extremely generous! Lastly, I started playing last year, and I’ve had a pretty good time playing the game, the events are fun, characters are beautiful, and world building is great! Overall, amazing game, no complaints!

Top Tier Game, only a few things…
Tue Jan 14 2025 Humility_238

Let’s start off like this: I love this game. The character designs sre unique, the animations and fighting style are clean and most of the characters really fit their personality and style with in game mechanics. The game is amazing for someone who wants a game they don’t have to spend hours in front of their screen for. The auto battle mode is amazing for people who wanna do other things while they play like that homework assignment that was due last night. Yeah, I’m talking about you. A few things people might complain about is: lack of things to do, very long quests, etc. The rewards the game gives are very generous and whilst this is a gacha game, I’d say you can play it F2P and get MOST things you want. Of course, it just depends. I’m almost fully free to play on the game, minus the one time I spend $10 since I had money to spare, and I’ve gotten my favorite character, Aventurine, and his lightcone. As well as some other amazing characters. The main story quests can be very long at times, which can put some people off. And it DOES take a little skill and practice to get good at the fighting mechanics, but over all the game is 100% worth it if you like anime gacha games with generous rewards and casual ways to farm materials. Later in the game it may appear that there’s a lack of things to do, which can put it off. Depends on how often you play.

Thank you for this masterpiece, MiHoYo ❤️

Let me start this off by saying I was a huge Genshin player before HSR came out, and like others say, they didn’t feel like Genshin had nearly enough rewards for the players. But HSR is so generous, I love it. I love the characters, I love the gameplay (especially the combat gameplay), I love the story, I love the graphics and designs of everything, I love the worlds, I just love it so much. The character designs are beautiful and really unique, their backstories are well thought-out and have made me cry several times over how sad they are :( The combat system has drastically improved from Genshin’s, in my opinion, since I really love the turn-based combat and how it gives you some more pace to battles. Speaking of, all the enemies in HSR are super interesting and very well designed. They can do a lot more within the battles now that there’s a turn-based combat system. The bosses are extremely unique and fascinating, too, like Sunday’s Charmony puppet from the last update (as of the time I’m writing this, of course). I really love all the worlds, especially Penacony and the Xianzhou Luofu, and not to mention the music in this game is IMMACULATE. It’s so good, I love it so much, go listen to ‘White Night’ from the Penacony trailer. It’s just amazing. Anyways, I would go on and on about how much I love this game, but my fingers hurt :) So, play this game if you want to have fun and love all the characters, because trust me, you will. Thank you MiHoYo for this masterpiece of a game, I love it ❤️

game good

TL;DR, game good if you like gacha Turn based strategies, especially if you like mihoyo’s artstyle, bad game if you don’t like the aforementioned and/or if you have a major skill issue that you don’t think you have (but I can assure you that you definitely have a skill issue ya bozo). also kafka is hot (the character from this game not the german guy or whatever (but he might still be, but im pretty sure hes dead and im not necrophilic so…)) this game is good but there are two reasons other than the gacha mechanics i can see people disliking this game for. first, if you don’t like Turn-Based Strategy games similar to Persona in turn basedness then you won’t like this. also, if you have a major skill issue but think you don’t, you will also dislike it. if the latter is true, you have a skill issue so cope+seethe+mald+L+bozo. if the former is true, I get it, tbs’ aint for everyone. if you don’t like the gacha mechanics, then there’s essentially no point in playing the game to get characters that you like outside of the initial ones because its a gacha game so no duh. the rates aren’t great for the gacha system, but it’s not hard to save currency in fairly large amts because of the abundance of it. take it from me, a guy who plans on saving all the way to the next kafka rerun because im a simp also she’s a mid S tier in terms of performance. the free 80 pulls is true, it’s just 80 pulls on standard i think, which is really good since standard has some really good (and hot imo) characters like bronya, yanqing, himeko, and Welt (welt ain’t as hot imo).
