Foretales is one of the most inventive narrative games I've played in years. It manages to tell a sprawling, epic fantasy story entirely through the medium of tabletop cards. It’s not a 'deckbuilder' in the traditional sense; it’s more of a card-based adventure. You have a deck of skills and companions, and you 'play' them on location cards to see what happens. The system is incredibly intuitive but allows for massive complexity.
The real hook is the 'Doomsday' clock. You have a limited number of turns to prevent various catastrophes, and you often have to choose between saving a village or gaining a powerful artifact. The art style, which feels like a premium animated storybook, and the stellar narration by Travis Willingham, elevate the experience into something truly special. It’s a game of hard choices and creative problem-solving that feels perfectly at home on a tablet.
Expansive Branching Narrative
Stunning Storybook Art Style
Fully Voiced Cast
High Replayability with Multiple Endings
Check the 'Prophecy' tab frequently. It shows you how many days are left until a major disaster. Sometimes it's better to skip a loot-heavy dungeon if it means you can reach a story objective before it's destroyed.
Foretales rewards creativity. Using a 'Distraction' card followed by a 'Stealth' card can often bypass entire combat encounters, preserving your health and food for boss fights.
No, it is a narrative adventure. While you can replay for different outcomes, the story and world are carefully crafted rather than randomized.
I love the game a lot- i think theres a few issues with the card mechanics(like, the card physics themselves- the card you’re hovering over not pulling to the front, sometimes the cards will be unselectable, etc-) but it doesn’t pull me out of the game! I actually could see using this same engine for more stories and expanding the world of volepain and his buddies- the studio’s creativity makes me think it could be a super successful series
Other developers should take note. That fact that a modern dev is willing to take time to make a complete game with beautiful art, story, UI and gameplay is refreshing. East to tell that this team enjoys creating quality things.
Unlike the rogue like deck builders on the market this game is completely story driven. The stories interesting, and the consequences of your choices and actions is a lot of fun to play with. Level progression itself though is just cycling through the same cards until you reach your destination. Combat is optional, but usually you just end up throwing all your resources just to end it without an actual fight. All in all the gameplay itself is lacking and you quickly feel the fatigue of the cyclic nature of the cards.
Don’t buy this if you get at all frustrated with games. After replaying my current region more than a dozen times, literally memorizing all the cards and paths, I’m still stymied and can’t progress. Maybe I should just start over and make different storyline choices, but can’t bring myself to throw away all that time getting to this last level. Certain play mechanics, like not being able to pre-arrange battle order, and not being able to replay a region within a level are just poor.
Fun game with great visuals and sounds. I especially enjoy the creativity behind some of the hidden interactions. I recommend for the price. Do wish it had a feature to move dialogue a bit quicker.
The game is good, but there is no cloud archiving, and switching devices cannot be seamlessly connected. Please add cloud archiving in the future.
Warning: this game is SLOW. Likely because this isn’t native to mobile, but the UI tells you nothing until you click on a card. Combat is slow. Flipping used cards is slow. Checking how each card interacts with the location cards is slow. It would be quicker to play this game on tabletop. I strongly recommend against this game.
You hear that volepain? Celebrities! “That’s adorable.” I’ve been really enjoying this game.
