Doom & Destiny Advanced is a love letter to classic JRPGs, but with a sharp, modern comedic edge. It manages to deliver a genuinely deep tactical combat system while simultaneously making fun of every trope in the book. The writing is the standout here; the four protagonists are incredibly likable and their meta-commentary on being in a video game is consistently funny.
Mechanically, the 'Advanced' version brings a wealth of content. The class system (Cosplay) is ingenious, allowing for massive party customization. The world is huge, filled with secrets, and the turn-based combat requires actual thought regarding elemental affinities and status effects. For fans of Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy who want something that feels both nostalgic and fresh, this is arguably one of the best RPGs on the App Store.
20 unique character classes with distinct playstyles
Over 15 chapters of story-driven content
Tactical turn-based combat with elemental strategy
Cross-platform PvP and Co-op Arena
Humorous, meta-fictional storyline
In this game, classes are called 'Cosplays'. Don't stick to just one! Switch roles frequently to unlock passive bonuses that stay with your character even when you change classes.
Pay attention to the color of the enemy's name to determine their element. Using a Water spell on a Fire-based enemy deals 2x damage, which is crucial for boss fights.
While there are references to the first game, Doom & Destiny Advanced is designed as a standalone experience that is accessible to new players.
This game completely blows the original out of the water. If that game was basically a goofy homage to classic jrpgs, this game is an evolution of them instead, with interesting and fun new mechanics. The class changes are a welcome addition along with all the aesthetic options for your characters. My biggest complaint would be that it’s a tad too easy to select the wrong option in battle. If you swipe too quickly, the game will register it as a tap and cause you to do the wrong actions. Maybe an option to separate the sides of the screen a la the original would have been nice, although for navigation it’s still an improvement to be able to control the game one handed. All in all this is a turn based rpg that no fan of the genre should ignore.
I bought this because I really liked the humor of the first one. This still has some of the humor, but there too many things I’m not liking. The combat system feels streamlined, same as gear and actions, but not necessarily for the better. It takes choice and control out of the player’s hands. Yes while you can still decide if you want Cleave instead of Double Slice as your hero’s options, it relegates it to some sidebar function, like an afterthought. The switch of putting the order of players on the right side of the screen instead of the usual left is annoying and adds nothing to gameplay other than trying to be different. Same as pressing on screen for x seconds to bring up menu. The swipes were fine, why change? Everytime u put ur finger on the screen, the menu popped up or the map would. Also the humor is constantly hampered by the typos and misspelling, and hackneyed jokes. I can’t begin to count the amount of misspelling. Did they outsource this to China? I wanted to like this, but it was only meh. This lacked the freshness and irreverence of the first game.
On the contrary I didn't mind the switch up from Advanced to the Original. It kept things fresh & plot line was still flowing with the original imo. I can agree being able to obtain food was cool to push past max stats, but all in all in it's a fun ride either way. Well put together game, everyone complaining about crashing or slow - should probably clear up some space or get an up to date phone lol I had maybe 2-3 crashes the entire 35+ hours I put into this game & that was usual due to what I had running in the background. Well don't Heartbit.. BRAVO!!
I had such a great time playing this game. After having finished the whole thing I am now working on a few endgame things for fun. I really do hope they make another one. I put a solid 70 hours into this game and that ranks it up there with some of the best rpgs I’ve played. Graphics are fun and it just hits a lot of the right spots. I wish the map was more interactive. But that’s really about my only complaint. Keeping my fingers crossed for a third title!!!
Great new entry. I love the control update. Same humor and satire. Good balance of new mechanics while keeping it easy to pick up right after the first game. You don’t have to play the original but it’s also well worth a go too.
I Love this game. Storyline, humor, art work, game development, options. I have been a fan since the first game. I will be buying the next game. That being said my game glitches on me so much. All I have to do is back out and come back into the game. Only a minor inconvenience but an annoying one. If that was fixed It would be 5 stars all around. Please keep these games coming!
This is a under appreciated game ! I absolutely loved playing both adv and the OG. My whole life I’ve been looking for games like these. They keep the old school jrpg with funny up to date Easter eggs and challenging puzzles/monsters. I have the steam versions of adv/OG and on my phone I have ADV! Can’t wait for worlds !!!!
Finally picked this up because I had been waiting for an update to support iPhone X and larger screens. So when I saw there was an update there weeks ago that said it was adding that support, I immediately bought it. But this app isn’t updated. Still same boxed in format it always has been. Doesn’t even extend the controls (ie, you can still see the time, etc on the screen). Not a happy customer!
