Medieval 2 is by far my favorite game of all time, I can confidently say I’ve logged more hours on this game than anyone in the world, I’ve literally beaten the game with the byzantines 500 times across about 100 mods, and that doesn’t count the thousands of times on other factions and times I’ve played to about turn 60 to 100 and gotten bored, on steam alone in 3-5 years of logging time on steams platform I have something like 10,000 hours played, yes that’s right in a matter of 3 to 5 years I played ⅓ of my life….. That was all just to explain the extensive experience I have with medieval 2, now to the review….. The game is almost an exact copy of the latest original pc version, there are some new cool features, but for the most part the gameplay, starting units, territory, etc. are all the same, which I did originally find disappointing, but as I said there are some cool new features, mostly informational, but that is really all this game needed in a portal to phones/tablets. Overall I am happy with the port, but I would have really liked a few more improvements, but If you played and like the PC version this is a must have! The controls take a second to get used to if you’re not used to Rome on iPhone, but if you’ve played that already, you’ll be flying through turns on even the largest factions!
The Total War series games (Rome Total War, Total War Barbarian Invasion, Medieval Total War II, Empire Total War, and Shogun Total War) are my favorite games of all time… I played hours of these games on PC when they first came out. My PC burned out and my life got busy… I let go of these games until… RTW appeared in the APP store for Ipad! The developers did a PHENOMENAL job translating these games! Medieval Total War II is so fantastic you will never regret purchasing it. You can read the other reviews, so I’ll leave you with these additional tidbits- while you are playing (in the campaign, in the middle of a battle) you can close out with the home button, and open the game up later and there you are! Right back where you left off… no freezes, no lost games. The battles are just as smooth as the PC version… it just takes you a bit to learn how to navigate with the Ipad controls… but once you do, no problems. Nothing is lost or compromised in the Ipad version. After you play your first campaign, ALL of the factions open up and you can play any of the.. Hungarians, Russians, Portuguese… no limitations. You can play just the battles… famous ones plus your own custom designed encounters. The creative team of these games should get an award.. if you love Medieval history, you’ll love this games!
Love this game and love being able to play it on my phone. Just finished a long campaign as Spain on hard, everything was smooth mostly but almost every time you tap on a unit while on campaign map and immediately tap the unit next to it, you’ll unselect the unit you just tapped on previously instead. I didn’t experience this issue with Rome TW or Barbarian Invasion mobile versions, but when you need to quickly select multiple units from the roster instead of the map during battles, you’ll constantly need to retap the same troop as the game unselects it when you click a troop adjacent to it. Only a minor issue and can be worked around by pausing the game and then selecting the first troop, then briefly waiting, then tap the troop adjacent, then the game lets you select both units. I can recreate this issue almost consistently on the Medieval campaign, a small issue to an otherwise AMAZING port, well done!
I played Medieval II on steam a lot, and so obviously I was excited when this was announced, especially since I can’t play on my PC while away at college. It’s overall a great game, but has some rough edges that bother me. Just little things like I set the time limit of the battles to be 45 minutes but there were no time limits when I entered the campaign. That takes away the possibility of sallies ending in a draw, which I normally do a lot. The way the messages come in one at a time then disappear is weird. Merging depleted units together is an absolute pain and I almost thought that the feature was taken away for a bit. AI characters move slowly until you fast forward them, which is normal, but they go back to moving slowly despite me not pressing on them to do so. There’s a lot of white space in the buildings and troop selections, so I feel their icons could be made a little bigger to better tell which is which without looking at the description. Aside from these small details, I really like the game. It’s a very good adaptation from the original. I don’t know if there are more TW games to come after this one, but it would be awesome if there were. Look forward to new updates.
I love the game and how it plays. I only have one major complaint. I’ve started a couple of campaigns, but a common theme among them is that no matter how I play diplomatically and militarily, I always end up having to fight 7 different countries at once bc they don’t really go for each other. For the most part, they just target me. Ive even had Portugal come attack me in Dublin for no apparent reason. They won’t fight the Spanish or the moors. I’ve maintained a few alliances but that doesn’t do much to help. It basically just guarantees a little time for you to prepare to fight them too. also, I have noticed that enemies get units that they shouldn’t be able to get. For example, I fought Milan who held three cities and no castles but they were somehow getting knights and also handguns but they did not have the infrastructure for that when I finally took over. They be cheating lol.
Everything is cool and awesome! I love playing this game. However I have two problems: 1) When I touch the menu of faction, where I can choose the list of cities or the faction members, sometimes game stops to react on my touches, so I have to re-open the game, and then this problem disappears. Hope you will fix that soon. 2) In the Teutonic campaign, on 268th turn, I faced one problem: game freezes. It happened to me when Denmark besieged one of my cities (I play for Novgorod), and when I try to attack them from the city, the game freezes in one moment, no matter what I do, but music continues to play, so I can’t even stop the battle, and I just re-open game again, and I must start this battle again, and the game during the battle freezes again. I can’t go further. I really want you to fix that because I paid money for the game and for the DLC, and I want the game which won’t bring such technical surprises.
The game overall is great. The updates I think that should be added would be the ability to split your army during battle. Like choose light infantry and split them in to smaller groups and maybe even merge them with other units. Another update that would be cool would be a naval update which will add 3d battles for naval skirmishes. Then for that you can add spy, and assassin cutscenes for naval related things. Another update would be the adding of a few new units like: Bomb units which can place bombs near walls to blow them up, another unit could be maybe sharpshooters? For them they can use a longer musket and have far better aim, and last unit you could add can be either slingshot units, or a special naval unit of your choice. And the final idea for an update could be either a joke update or an April Fools update which can add hogriders, Russian bearriders, and maybe even a giant or a dragon.
With all the five star reviews I was really excited to try the mobile version, but have faced some major game ending bugs. It started when I went into a battle type view of a town by accident and all the menus and options disappeared and I had to force quit the game. That happened when I was preparing to siege Nottingham in the tutorial. When I reloaded the game, it was as though the siege preparations had never started and the Duke and army were permanently stuck in London, with no view of Nottingham. I looked in every menu and tried everything I could think of and thought maybe the option to lay siege would come up again and it never did, so I lost the tutorial. If that kind of thing can happen in the tutorial, and was upsetting enough, I can’t imagine having something like that happen to a real campaign that I’d invested tons of hours in. I’m unsure whether to try playing this game more or just give up and count my money as lost because I’m already upset enough that I couldn’t try to win the mini campaign without having to start all the way over.
