Qwirkle is one of those rare board games that is 'minutes to learn, a lifetime to master,' and this digital adaptation captures that essence perfectly. The gameplay is a brilliant mix of Scrabble-style board building and color/shape matching. You don't need to be a math whiz to play, but you do need a keen eye for patterns to set yourself up for a high-scoring 'Qwirkle' (a line of all six shapes or colors).
The app's interface is clean and functional, with thoughtful touches like customizable tile colors and backgrounds. The 4 difficulty levels of AI provide a solid challenge for solo players, while the pass-and-play mode remains the best way to enjoy it with family. The animations are playful without being distracting, and the tutorial ensures that even those who have never seen the physical box can start playing within five minutes.
Solo, Online, and Pass-and-Play modes
4 levels of AI difficulty
Personalize tiles with custom color schemes
Interactive tutorial and help sections
Game Center achievements and leaderboards
A Qwirkle occurs when you complete a line of 6 tiles that are either all the same color with different shapes, or all the same shape with different colors. This grants a massive 6-point bonus!
If you're new, start on 'Easy' to learn how the AI blocks your moves. Move up to 'Expert' when you're ready to face an opponent that plans several turns ahead.
You can use the local Pass-and-Play mode to play with up to 4 people on a single device.
This version is awesome! But there are a few things you may want to know: If you updated before completing current games in the older version or had automatic updates turned on, yeah those games may be lost, but achievements and all else are still there. To the Friends thing, everybody has to be updated and playing the same version. Get all your friends to update and you’ll be golden. I had to reinvite a couple of friends but no biggie once they updated.
Downloaded this after purchasing the board game. Me and my wife have loved it and decided to each purchase the app to play online together at times when we couldn’t be together or bring the game with us. We’ve never been able to play online together as we’ve never had so much as the option to invite each other to play despite being friends on Game Center. I’ve looked at the developer’s comments to others on this app facing the same issue, but it makes zero sense. There is no “Connect” option to turn off and on in GameCenter like they say. Still tried unchecking boxes, turning both phones off and back on. Nothing. Also we both have the latest software version at the time of this writing (3.0.3). Even went so far as to delete and redownload. Not worth it. $3 down the drain.
The rectangle box with my score is so dark compared to the computer score or the other players score box which is a light orange. I have to constantly stop my play to take a screenshot to enlarge the screen to see what my score is compared to my opponent. Is there a way that the dark red box could be changed to like a light pink or no shading?!! otherwise this game is fantastic. I will update my rating and review if you could please just change the color of the shading for us people with low vision. Thank you.
I was having an issue with being able to play with friends. I reached out to game developers and they told me what to do…and it worked! Naturally it boiled down to user error (me). Love the board game so I thought I’d try the app version. Playing with the robot drives me a little crazy because he blocks almost every move I want to make. I guess I need to learn to play better. 😄
This game is wonderful. I have purchased several physical board game versions and love it; however, I have not been able to play using Game Center on iPhone or Mac book pro. The only way I’m able to see the opponent has taken a turn is by closing Qwirkle and reopening it. Not a good user experience for the app. Has anyone else had these problems? Works fine for robot mode so for solo play everything works great. This would be a 5 star if I could get online play to work correctly. The game itself is wonderful.
Game play is not like the instructions for the physical tile game. Create a settings that you can turn off and on types of play example. Scoring in multiple directions/ placing tiles in different lines, placing tiles in different rows. Blocking rows after the first Qwirkle is formed or the second or third. Makes the game play different and multiple Qwirkle form easily. Optional 7 and 8 or nine tiles depending on 2 players. Creating a board option with minus points on it…. Turning on and off features can make the game more personal and versiTILE for us that like to play a lot. These are things we do when we physically play the tile game. Thanks
This is a new glitch as of Jan 2026… if another player abandons a game, and i then resign to end it… and i also hit ‘ end game’… the game just sits in my active list of games and i cannot get rid of it like before. Not even an ‘X’ button to remove it even though it is an ended game. It’s been days now and i still have several of these dead games in my active list, taking up space and getting confusing. Please fix!!?? Thank you
Update!! I have changed my review as the tech support guy (Tim - who is amazing BTW) contacted me and thru a series of debugging he found my problem and my sisters and I are back at playing again!! Great game. Been playing for many many years. ————- Help! Latest update has me frustrated. Where are my friends? How can I start a game with my sisters? Please tell me y’all are gonna be able to fix this!?
