Omen Exitio: Plague is a dark, gripping love letter to the gamebooks of the '80s and '90s. It masterfully weaves the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft with a gritty historical setting in 1896 Zanzibar. As an expert in narrative-driven games, I was immediately struck by how much weight your choices actually carry. This isn't just flavor text; your chosen skills and moral decisions directly branch the story and determine who lives, who dies, and how far Jake Huntington falls into madness.
The art style is phenomenal, with hundreds of hand-drawn visuals that perfectly capture the oppressive, decaying atmosphere of the setting. The sound design, from the haunting score to the ambient effects, makes the experience incredibly immersive. It captures the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' nostalgia while adding modern RPG elements like skill checks and character progression. If you enjoy deep, literary horror and mystery, this is a must-play.
Branching Lovecraftian narrative
RPG-style skill system
Hundreds of hand-drawn illustrations
Historical setting in 1896 Zanzibar
Multiple unique endings
In the beginning, choose skills that complement your playstyle. 'Medicine' helps in survival scenarios, while 'Observation' reveals hidden clues. Be careful with 'Occult' knowledge—it opens doors but may cost you your sanity in the long run.
The game plays like an interactive novel where you must select from multiple choices. These decisions can lead to different locations, encounters with historical figures, and varied story outcomes based on your character's stats.
It is a 'gamebook,' which is an interactive novel where your choices determine the plot, similar to the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' series but with RPG mechanics.
If you liked the old, “Choose Your Own Adventure”books mixed with a little bit of role-play and character building then you have got to download this game! There is an excellent Cthulhu mythos storyline with adult themed choices. That really kept me captivated. Remember, this game is really an unfolding storyline with about eight hours of reading to get through.
It gets to addressing the first character or ignoring and nothing happens…about 3 minutes into game and nothing works 😞
