Our Expert Score

86/100

Nova Island is a refreshing take on the 1v1 card battler that prioritizes charm and readability over complexity. The art style is a vibrant, neon-drenched love letter to anime aesthetics, and the music is legitimately catchy. What I love most is the 1x1 board—it forces every card placement to be a meaningful strategic choice.

Unlike Hearthstone or Marvel Snap, Nova Island feels much more like a tactical board game. You aren't just playing cards; you're vying for control of 'Nova' energy through clever character interactions. The economy system is fair, with a heavy emphasis on skill and deck building rather than who has the most expensive cards. It’s fast, friendly, and features a cast of characters (the 'Pros') that bring a ton of personality to every match.

I only have one issue and it’s the main aspect

I hate the chance element. The amount of times I’ve filled the board and don’t get a single card active is ridiculous. It’s incredibly frustrating when I spend time trying to win and strategize only for my opponent to get dumb luck with one card. I really think the chance should only active the card’s ability’s and have all the hearts count at the end of the round. It’s just such an dumb way to lose a easy game too. Everything else about this game is absolutely perfect. Love the cards, characters, even the market prices are relatively fair. I’ve even found the match making is great except every now and then. This game is amazing but this one thing is just holding it back.

Highly underrated

This game is one of the greatest things you can find on the AppStore. It’s engaging, strategic, and has something for everybody. There are a lot of reasons on why this game is so amazing, which I will now promptly cover. First of all, many of the reviews shown are very outdated, and most of them address the chance element of this game. However, a while back the devs released a huge update where they adapted the chance element to be more strategic, so take many older reviews with a grain of salt. However, one thing that has also not been addressed by these reviews is that the game now contains micro-transactions. Most of these are purely cosmetic while some will allow players to get ahead of the competition. The game is not pay to win though, due to the many rewards that are given by simply playing the game. The best thing about this game is the gameplay itself. It’s something unique that allows players to think strategically while having lots of fun. The animation is great, with a diverse selection of cards and characters to choose from. I recommend this game to any person, no matter what preferences an individual may have, Nova Island is a game made for everyone.

So cute….but i’m left numb.

So I want to start this out by saying that the character designs, art, concept- it’s all very cute. I really love the idea of this game! However, the gameplay itself is quite boring. I’ve played lots of different card builders, but it doesn’t feel as interesting in this game. If I had to guess, it’s the odd twist where in this game you’re racing to charge something to a capacity before your opponent using your cards. Something about this leaves me feeling bored, and left wanting to do something else. If I had a suggestion for this game it would be to overhaul the current battling system. It doesn’t feel competitive, and it doesn’t feel as though there’s any true strategy to it. People need some sort of challenge and this is just leaving me with a hole in my chest from boredom. It may sound harsh, but i’m writing this review BECAUSE I see the potential for this to become much better than it is now. It’s clear there’s a lot of love put into it, from the art, animation, and unique designs for each card. If the devs of this game see this, I hope they take this into stride and figure some way to make things more interesting.

I love this game more than ever!

I've been playing Nova Island since the start, and it just keeps getting better and better! There's no longer "too much rng" after the energizing update in Jan 2024 which allows strategically taking advantage of the board setup, and in April the 1.0 release brought a ton of new content and progression, filling out the delightful characters and world of the Island. The core of what I love about the game has been the same from the start - the engaging gameplay with lots of exciting moments and strategic back-and-forth, the supremely charming colorful world and incredible music, the adorable animations bringing the characters and creatures to life. It’s clear the game was made with love and playing it never fails to make me happy. I enjoy card games, but I don't like to stress about them, and I find Nova Island's gameplay is very accessible and fun to jump into, while also having plenty of strategic depth to dig into. The way you interact with the board and your opponent changes in interesting ways as you get new cards, and pros' superpowers make each game feel different and exciting. The other games modes like Turbo Draft and Central Circuit are their own fun challenge, too. There's a reason I've been playing Nova Island for years and telling everyone to try it, and recent updates have just made me love it more! I can't wait to see how it grows.

This game slaps, card game with a new twist
Fri Jun 10 2022 Big Floppaa

As said, this game slaps. With most card-based games the objective is to deplete the opponent’s health. However, in this game the goal is to score points, with 20 winning you the game. In typical card-based games, one would focus on destroying the opponent’s units in order to eventually attack them, but the point-scoring system changes your thought process to,”Is it better to attack a unit, or buff my own to score more points? Should I place a unit, or buff an existing one?” Each tile on the board has a percent chance your unit will score points, which makes the thought process more complicated, yet enjoyable, because it makes the player think about how the synergy of their cards work, and if it’s worth not scoring points one turn in order to score more in the next. 10/10 would, and have, recommended to my friends.

Not talked about enough

I’ve been playing this game on and off over a few years on my iPad and it always took a while for me to get the hang of it, but I could tell there was something special about it. I recently started again and am surprised at how good it’s gotten. Great art, music, friendly style and gameplay- unique enough to standout as its own full bodied game to enjoy before bed or commuting .. and there are only 224 reviews??? This game is criminally underrated and I can only hope it gets bigger and better so more people can enjoy it. The tutorial levels are super helpful and I am finally getting into deck building. The UI is great, but could be a little easier to navigate. I would totally put nova island stickers on my laptop and water bottle.

Love the concept, needs improvement. (TOO MUCH RNG!)

The game is fairly fun, the main thing that sets it back a ton is the constant use of RNG. No matter how well you play, literally any match can make you lose if your unlucky. A few better ways that I’ve thought of on how they could make the game better is by… -Making a game mode where spaces don’t DONT use RNG to determine gaining points. For example : make each spot multiply your characters hearts by a certain amount. (Like some that multiply by 2, or 0.5, or 1, etc.) Better spaces multiply it by more and vice versa. (Games might move quicker so they might have to add you have to reach 30 points instead of 20) - You can also add cards that increase the RNG amount on the space (these could effect both players or only you) but it helps at least have a way to GUARANTEE points. -Another way is for every time a spot with RNG does NOT trigger, the RNG amount could slowly increase so EVENTUALLY it will HAVE to trigger. (After it triggers, it could reset to the base amount.) I really see huge potential for this game, especially if they add more cards and professionals! Just being able to use SKILL rather then relying on things you can’t control will VERRRRY much help. If they can find I way to fix these problems I would happily rate this game 5 stars!!

The odds
Wed Sep 15 2021 qefqwefcewrfveqrfv

The gameplay can be so infuriating sometimes. It feels like the game chooses the winner sometimes. An example from a game I just played: I’m losing with 13 points while they have 19 points but I have two cards on the %90 and %85 spots and they have two cards on the %20 and %15 spots. I could have won and honestly should have won considering the odds were very heavily in my favor yet whatever stupid algorithm this game uses caused me to lose. I have a theory that the odds are better for the higher ranked player. Sometimes I just get incredibly lucky against lower ranked players and I’ve noticed higher ranking player than me getting crazy lucky against me. Everything else in this game is amazing but the big downfall will definitely be the games algorithm.
