Pretty okay

A fair number of puzzles available for free. Gotta watch ads to get to them, but my adblocker lets me bypass them. Puzzles are all roughly equivalent to the NYT Monday or Tuesday puzzle difficulty, though there are more repeated clues from puzzle to puzzle on this app than in the Times. No pencil mode. It doesn't skip letters you've already typed either. And the arrows to move between clues don't proceed onward from where you place the cursor by tapping. They jump the cursor to the next place on from where you last brought the cursor using the arrow keys. So don't bother with the arrows, they're more of a hassle than they're worth. Honestly even with all those little complaints, this is one of the best free crossword apps I've ever used. I would prefer good puzzles over all those other features, and even though they're too easy for me, they're fun little time-wasters. If I had to deal with the ads though, it’d be a 2 star.

Fun App with Some Issues

Overall, I like the app, utilize it daily and did upgrade to the ad-free version but there are some issues: 1) If you utilize coins for “See Wrong” and you leave the puzzle to start another and then go back, the “See Wrong” disappears, so you may have spent your coins for naught. 2) It would be helpful if when you utilize coins for 4 Letters that those letters are highlighted in some way, confirming that they are correct. If there are certain answers I may not know, it is helpful to know which letters have been confirmed to attempt to finish the puzzle. 2) It would be great to have an option to select between across or down in terms of automatically moving to the next word, currently very cumbersome to try to toggle. 3) By paying for the ad-free version, I thought that there would be additional puzzles or puzzle packs added routinely but there is a finite amount excluding the daily puzzle. I will not be renewing my subscription once the annual period is up as I will have completed all (or substantially all) the puzzles by then. 4) I have also experienced where a puzzle is duplicated (all the same clues within a different puzzle in the same pack) and have had situations where my updated inputs had not saved if I left the app to go to something else. Again, good app with some problems to be fixed to warrant an annual subscription.

Unfortunate

I love crossword puzzles and I do enjoy this free version bectthe number of ads wasn't crazy. One thing I didn't love was having to leave the app open because it doesn't save your game progress if you are unable to complete in one sitting. Not a huge deal...However, this one really struggles with content. It is difficult to complete crosswords with misspelled words, missing letters, clues don't tell you if it is more than one word. At first I just thought it was a one off mistake. Kept trying and almost every daily puzzle has some sort of mistake. Unfortunately, I am giving up on this app...

Too many ads and no offline access

Similarly to what others have said the new amount of ads is extremely frustrating and too much, especially considering they pop up multiple times in the middle of puzzles now. Additionally with the new update I cannot access any puzzles offline. I can only scroll on the app when not connected to data/wifi without any way to play(even puzzles that are in progress are inaccessible). Before this update this app was my go to game app to use when commuting as it provided daily challenging, but mostly solvable puzzles that I could play whenever. I guess that is not possible for me now unfortunately as someone who does not have unlimited data. I’m disappointed after this new update and hoping these issues will be fixed in the future. At the moment I can’t recommend(the free version) and will have to start looking for another crossword app.

Why Do My Puzzles Disappear?

I like working these and they are a good mix of fairly easy and more difficult clues. However I don’t understand why my puzzles have disappeared before I was able to complete them? And why can’t I utilize my total points available instead just an allotment for a puzzle? Kind of annoyed by several things and of course the intrusive ads although I’d expect that on the free version. I have had better crossword apps to be honest.

Was great until latest update

Used to play it all the time and loved it, but the newest update has an ad every 2.5 minutes. Sometimes the ads aren’t skippable and freeze up causing the game to crash losing all of your progress on the puzzle. It’s just too annoying to even play anymore. I don’t think it’s worth it to upgrade to ad free. I don’t mind ads, I know it comes with the territory but now it’s excessive and frustrating. I will update this if they fix it, otherwise I might just delete. It was the best free crossword app I was able to find prior to recent update.

Decent But Glitchy

I’m not entirely opposed to ads to play a free app. But when you finish the crossword and it’s 100% correct, most of the time it just doesn’t do anything. Occasionally it gives you coins and says you’ve done it. But most of the time it’s just done. No way to check if there was a typo since you can only get coins if you purchase them or finish the puzzle… but when it won’t tell you you’re done, you don’t get the coins. Potential is there, still needs a bit of work to get the kinks out.

Not good

I never write reviews but this one deserves a comment. I’ll cut to the chase. As you advance you’ll find misspellings - letters omitted which complicates solving the puzzle. Abbreviations for words inconsistent with the clues. Constant clues referencing people and historical events from the 1930’s to 1950’s. No introduction page or reference to the creator, only 2 tabs at the bottom of the screen to “Continue” or “Upgrade”. The clues are confusing even for crossword puzzle pros. Oftentimes I’ve had to enter letters by trying all of the letters in the alphabet just to solve the puzzle. I’m done. It’s a hot mess.
