Our Expert Score

92/100

Blacken Slash is a masterclass in minimalist design and tactical depth. It’s a 'byte-sized' tactical RPG that strips away the fluff of the genre to focus on what really matters: tight, turn-based combat and complex character building. Developed by a solo creator, the game feels incredibly personal and polished, featuring a striking retro-80s aesthetic and a pulsing synthwave soundtrack that perfectly fits the 'glitchy' combat vibe.

Each level is a small, focused puzzle where positioning and skill synergy are paramount. The 'loot' system is surprisingly deep, allowing you to create powerful builds that can completely change how you approach combat. I love the 'Ladder' mode, which provides a fresh start and a competitive element every week. It’s a game that respects your intelligence, offering a challenge that is tough but always fair. For fans of roguelikes and strategy, this is an absolute must-play.

Very well made turn based roguelike. I have played countless hours of roguelike games and I find myself thoroughly enjoying this gem! It is simple yet holds a lot of tactical depth, and I mean a lot. The graphics are a nice change of scenery from the usual. I may recommend a few upgrades for future updates, but I’ll have to progress further in order to understand how much content there already is to enjoy. Worth every byte of storage space!

I waited to download this because I didn’t think I would like it. It looks pretty basic in like a puzzle game. But whoa it’s so much more. The humor everything about the game the way it feels to progress all of it is excellent. Definitely a five star game. I hope it works off line. oh and most importantly and making it deserve 6 to 10 stars is that there are no in app purchases that I can see.

So Good

Tightly balanced, minimal roguelite with an endearingly funny backstory and a great synthwave soundtrack. I enjoyed every minute of my first 5 hours of play…and then I learned I’d managed to completely overlook the weapons upgrade mechanic. Mind blown. Rock solid gameplay loop with just the right mix of RNG and tactical gameplay. This game is the best of everything I love about roguelikes crammed into a keenly formatted byte sized packet.

It’s good

Its easy to understand and fun to play! Exactly what you expect from this kind of title. Well worth the money, but it also has a lite version if you, I don’t know love micro transactions or whatever.

Well made, lacks strategic depth

The combat is woefully boring…It plays much more like a dungeon crawler than a tactics game (just move and hack and shoot), which doesn’t work when the levels are tiny. The best and most strategic part of the game is putting your build together, but with just a single unit/piece/character it feels uninteresting and shallow…again, like a dungeon crawler. If we had two+ units instead of one, I think it might be much, much more interesting. The game is fairly clean. But, sadly, boring. If you leverage the archive system to pass abilities between runs, the game is trivially easy for a veteran gamer. I love turn based games like this, but there are better options available.

Sort of like a 4D chess on adventure mode while constantly managing your stats. There is nothing else out there like it. Definitely a GEM of a game.

Mathematical!

Really fun and simplistic strategy roguelike well with the $5 since mobile games are filled with nonsense and garbage. Very please and looking forward to more work from the developer.
