Our Expert Score

88/100

Art of Solitaire is a rare gem that understands that card games should be as much about the atmosphere as they are about the mechanics. While the core gameplay is the Solitaire we all know, the presentation elevates it to a meditative experience. The hand-painted backgrounds are genuinely beautiful, and the ability to customize card decks to match the theme is a great touch.

The 'Galleries' progression provides a sense of purpose that is often missing from other Solitaire apps. Unlocking a new art style feels like a reward for your focus and patience. It’s the perfect app for someone who wants to unwind after a long day without being bombarded by loud colors and aggressive ads.

Big fan BUT the ads are terrible
Wed Dec 28 2022 thepinupchemist

The art and design of this app is so much fun. My only complaint is that the ads in this app are more aggressive than any other app I’ve ever experienced. They typically have three stages, and you have to exit out three times like it’s a pop up. The ways to exit are often hidden or small so that you accidentally click on them and pull up the App Store. I understand needing ad revenue, and I enjoy this enough to pay a one-time price, but it’s a highly-priced subscription service instead. It really lowers the quality of the app, but at least it’s very pretty and fun, so those win out over how bad the ads are. I just felt like I should write a review and warn people what they’re getting into if they don’t pay the subscription service.

Ive loved this game for years!

Years and years! My go to game for medical waiting rooms, layovers and late sleepless nights. Lately ive been kind of miffed about the changes to collecting cards, I really DO NOT LIKE how more than half the time you get cards from decks you already have. The odds need fixed. I don’t mind occasionally hitting a dupe, but more than 75% of the time makes card collecting painful when collecting things is typically an activity and game function I really love and thoroughly appreciate. Also as of recently the game will not even let me watch an ad for a card reward as it already forced me to watch one as soon as my game ended (with no reward) and when i try to willingly watch an ad for a prize it just says there’s no ads??? I just watched one what do you mean!! I really would like a little compensation for that business because that left a very gross feeling with me. Like i feel like im owed at least a crack at a new card for every other ad. You’re way stingy about them as it is, and it makes collecting a slog. It wasn’t always this way, either, or i might not care as much but the rate of progression for as many different decks as there are to collect is just ridiculous right now as it used to be manageable and even very enjoyable. Right now i make so little progress with so much gameplay it feels downright pointless.

Beautiful, but too hard and too expensive

I really hate to write this review as on first impression I absolutely love this concept. The beautiful card art and backgrounds, the flick animation is satisfying and makes it easy to play with one hand, lastly I adore the ASMR option for sound. It would be the PERFECT solitaire app for me and I would’ve even been willing to pay the over expensive annual fee if it weren’t for the fact that the game continues to try to micro transaction constantly even if if you pay the $35 for the year. The second thing is that I am a semi-beginner at solitaire and I prefer to play in bed as I’m going to sleep as a soothing and relaxing activity. But even the easy levels on this app get frustratingly hard fast (this is in comparison to the two other solitaire games I play in which I’ve never had trouble finishing easy games). This is again because they want to micro transaction you to buy more hints (which they only give you ten even if you buy premium). If they ever added an endless random deal game option rather than the level system (that deals the same exact hand over and over) I would gladly pay them to play it. Until then I am deleting this app. I genuinely hope they read the reviews and make changes as I would love to come back to it eventually.

Love it, but the ads…

This is the most aesthetically pleasing and fun solitaire app I’ve found. Collecting different decks is really fun, and flicking the cards is really satisfying. I also enjoy that it has more card games than just solitaire. However, the ads almost make the game unbearable to play. You get an ad every single time you finish a game. Even just restarting a level or going to the menu prompts an ad sometimes! Yes, the ads are only 5 seconds long, but they’re so aggressive and plentiful that the short length really doesn’t make it feel better. I honestly would prefer 30 second ads that show up less often, having my gameplay interrupted constantly is just too irritating. I would 100% buy an IAP to remove the ads, but all they offer is a subscription… I get the reasoning, but a subscription is extremely unappealing and judging by the reviews some people feel the same. The subscription already offers more perks than just getting rid of ads, so I don’t see why a separate “no ads” IAP can’t exist alongside it. That would take the game to 5 stars for me. A small nitpick as well: it takes extremely long to complete decks because I just keep getting duplicate cards. I love this game but I’d also love to see some changes to how advertising is handled. I hope the devs start considering a no ads IAP.

I’ve been playing this game for a few years, and I absolutely adore it. I love both the game mode options and the indie artist support. Unlike other developers, I appreciate the disclaimer that all levels are solvable instead of a level generator that frequently messes up. I really hope there will be a future option for a one-time purchase for no ads. Though I understand why it’s subscription based, it’s unfortunate. I just came back to the game after a few months to find the 3.0 update. I wouldn’t say it’s a downgrade, but some aspects are a little laggy and I wish I could skip some of the new animations. When the autocomplete option appears on screen, the button takes awhile to register before it starts autocompleting the level. It’s also slightly annoying that I have to open the card packs and go through the animation before I can move onto the next level. I’m at a point in the game where I have enough coins to buy the decks I wanted, and don’t really have a need to collect anymore. I wish the animation was skippable and if it was enabled that the cards I collected would gather in the tab like it used to.

A few classic card games, a lot more crashes
Mon Apr 18 2022 hulmal

It’s a decent app if you can ignore the constant crashing and overheating of your phone. I don’t have the latest iPhone but it’s only a few generations behind. Which leads me to believe this is just some error on the developers end. I would hold off on downloading this or purchasing anything within the app until they can get control of these waaaayyy too frequent crashes. Many people have had similar complaints where it will crash right after an ad. To be honest I wish I had that experience. It will crash in the middle of my game and delete my progress on whatever game I was playing. But if you were wondering whether the app saved how many hints you had left then worry not! Even if your progress gets deleted back to the point before you even used the hint it makes sure to keep track of just how many you used. Gotta get them micro transactions up am I right? I’ll give the developers the benefit of the doubt and hope that this is just a major error caused by the crashes. Anyways, it’s nothing new. Certainly not innovative. It features card games older than me and developers ages put together. The art is nice though and I’m glad they credits the artists.

needs improvement

i like the concept of the app a lot. i know in game currency is something easy to hate but playing a mobile game without it feels so empty these days… so i’m glad this card game had it actually. global statistics is a feature that i thought was pretty cool. and the customization of cards and backgrounds is phenomenal and creative. its especially helpful for me with my bad vision, there are tons of ways to customize without it becoming unreadable for me which i really appreciate. issues: my main one would probably be OVERHEATING. it’s a card game… how much does it take to run?? i’ve turned off every special effect imaginable in settings (60 fps (?), textured cards, etc.) and no improvement in frustrating freezes or a ridiculously hot phone. second big problem, the reason why i’m finally deleting it, is the progress plateau, if you could call it that. i’ve hit a wall in every difficulty, every game and every variation now, and it’s frustrating to never actually win a game anymore. this makes me really sad cause i’ve enjoyed the app a lot thus far but i guess i’ll have to get a different card game now. other smaller random issues: it’s been a while since i checked but landscape for spider doesn’t work the way you would want it to if you’re laying on your side: it’ll just switch back to portrait mode. and at some point for me, solitaire just completely stopped giving me lost game notifications which is pretty bothersome.

Updated: wish ad removal was more complete
Fri Aug 19 2022 Somethingwillwork

Update: Due to dev response, which I appreciate as I did miss the ability to remove ad bar with any purchase, I felt I should add that if you’re able to remove ad bar, couldn’t you then just remove ad breaks as well? Again for a flat rate. If I’m paying to remove the bar, that means I don’t want ads dispiriting my play, ergo I don’t want ad breaks either. I understand they gotta happen in the meantime, but again my point is I’d love to be able to remove them all with like a $15 charge or something to that effect. Otherwise, thanks for response and largely great game. Old review: I just wish there was a small, flat price to pay to get rid of the ad bar. I’d pay it in a heart beat as I love playing every once in a while, but do not want to pay a monthly subscription for solitaire. That ad bar really makes me want to not play as long. It really detracts from the cool, flick atmosphere that the table/game sets up.
