Our Expert Score

88/100

As a streaming hub, the Apple TV app offers one of the cleanest visual experiences available on iOS. The typography is bold, artwork looks incredibly crisp on OLED screens, and the HDR/4K Dolby Vision playback quality is top-tier. The app acts as an incredible digital shelf, grouping your individual digital purchases, premium sub-channels, and Apple TV+ originals neatly. The 'Up Next' feature remains an industry benchmark for keeping track of what episode you are on across multiple content providers.

However, its ambition to be a total aggregator can occasionally lead to an overwhelming interface layout. Distinguishing between what is included in your active Apple TV+ subscription, what requires an external app connection, and what is strictly a premium rental or purchase from the iTunes ecosystem can be confusing at first glance. Once you get used to navigating the specific tabs, it serves as a highly fluid, premium, and reliable entertainment ecosystem.

Apple TV+

I received a request to write a review, so I will. Apple TV+ is phenomenal. You guys have done a wonderful job of creating a great brand in such a short period of time. I particularly love the super-intelligent writing on all of the shows and films, the great acting, and the cinematography is stellar and very unique to Apple. I LOVE “The Morning Show.” It’s appointment viewing reminiscent of network television. I’m hoping there’s a chance you’ll bring back “Servant.” I adored the slow pace and build up of that show. I also loved the fact that it was based in Philadelphia, a city that’s so rich in content possibilities. I also love “Home,” which is beautifully done. I want Apple to come up with more programming focusing on African-American, Hispanic and Asian people and characters, but I do NOT want to see one-dimensional, stereotypical, picture-board cut outs. I want to see people of color who are WHOLE human beings who have lives, intentions and motivations that aren’t often seen. In short, LEAD with their HUMANITY and not with their ethnicity. The actors will naturally supply the ethnicity and nuances. In addition, I’d like to see Apple TV+ take a stronger stance against worldwide injustice and the current threat to democracy with more news content and documentaries that enlighten the public. As a (former) journalist and current corporate communications professional, I believe the world needs more of this type of content. In short, great job, but Apple TV+’s best work is still ahead. Hope that helps. — Michael Corbin

Pretty good, minus a few annoying features
Mon Jun 30 2025 annexw

The app is great except for a few annoying features. First, if you’re watching a series, the app doesn’t auto-play the next episode when the previous one finishes. I understand this is to save bandwidth for continuous streaming, but it would be nice to have it set by a timer or something else so that you don’t have to re-enter the app to manually choose to play the next episode when screen-casting to a larger device. Second, you have to re-select the captions for every single video. I have to re-start or rewind so many videos because I forget to reset the captions at the start of each one. If there is an option to automatically apply a captions setting preference it is not easy to find. Finally, the app shows a lot of series and movies that are not available on the app. I know they’re trying to encourage connecting other streaming apps to this one, but most of the suggested programs/movies are not available through the app. I don’t understand why they would promote more content from other apps than Apple’s original content (which has been really good, from what I’ve seen so far). Other than that, the app itself is easy to use and pretty intuitive. The picture is clear and it doesn’t freeze up or blitz out if you rewind or fast-forward a video.

There are some bugs!
Fri Feb 14 2025 re2401

I will say there are some great shows on the Apple Plus streaming platform. I also like that one can purchase and watch movies/shows independent from the streaming subscription, too. However, the iOS app has some issues that present during the watching of certain content on Apple Plus. Near the very end of an episode, the app routinely will abruptly cut to the start of another show on the service. It seems like this is meant to be a sort of autoplay feature, but it clearly is bugged as it occurs before the credits sequence for the show you’re watching even begins, which cuts out several seconds at the end the episode (you might miss a big, last-minute reveal, for instance). Another bug I’m experiencing is this—when the credits start rolling and the screen minimizes (to showcase another Apple Plus show), you can go back and watch the credits, but when I do this, the play/pause interface stays in the screen, and can’t be hidden. This makes it hard to watch the after-credits behind-the-scenes videos that exist on at least some of the shows on Apple Plus, such as season 2 of Severance (great show). It’s simply a distracting hassle at the end of an episode to be abruptly taken to another show, have to go back to the show I was watching, resize the screen after it minimizes for the other show’s ad, scrub by hand to the end of the credits, and finally have the play/pause interface stuck on the screen during the behind-the-scenes vid. Maybe there could be a “watch behind-the-scenes featurette” button that appears alongside the ad at the start of the credits? If Apple is reading this, please fix these two bugs and consider something like I offered to make these after-credits clips easier to watch. With all these issues, they’re very easy to miss!

Was a great app - before recent update
Sun Dec 18 2022 socrates99

I used this app as did my entire household for a jumping off point to watch most anything anywhere on all our streaming apps and really like the way it kept the programs we recently watched or followed tiled across the top. Now they play horrible loud previews across the top and make the shows you normally watch a secondary feature. No one in my household is going to use it as the starting point for streaming shows anymore. We will go to the individual apps directly as there is enough space taken up in the appletv app with appletv + offerings already. I know apple must need to make money placing these ads across the top, taking up a entire screen but I wouldn’t think they were this broke. Surely someone must think before they execute these changes. I wish I could go back to the previous version of the app. It seems to have updated with the appletv OS and iOS updates so it’s not like we have a choice in the matter other than to not use it. I only wish my purchased content were somewhere else. I can easily cancel the streaming subscriptions (channels as they call them) I have through appletv and move them to the individual apps which is probably going to make things easier as integration with appletv has had issues in the past periodically. All in all it’s a poorly designed change to the app. Makes it not worth the gain using it and makes me question my reliance on my appletv box as I wonder what they will wreck in it next. If it works please don’t break it!

Lost - Apple staff error - can you help?
Thu Dec 19 2024 GrandmaSaTX

Apple Staff advised me to run a legacy contact on an Apple account that I was the owner and user of. I had no idea what it was for. I had simply called about a watch that was malfunctioning. I wanted to cancel an Apple credit card not a 15-year-old Apple account. I’m convinced that Apple ‘s process surrounding that was deceptive and Apple now has done nothing in nine months to restore either the functioning of my account or access to my purchases. I have all the login information. I had everything to confirm ownership of the account and even Apple now acknowledges it. I did own the account and they would fix it if they could. So because of an Apple staff error and an irreversible process, I no longer have anything and I paid a few months for Apple TV+ but all it does is remind me of the 22+ seasons and movies I already paid for and don’t have. Please see qualified instructions following the death of a family member. Do not trust Apple Senior Support to tell you what the correct process is for anything. Apple I’m asking that you return access to my purchases or if you can’t do that then give me a credit to re-purchase what I owned in the meantime I’m going to quit paying just have my heart broken by the reminder of everything we lost (no it’s not just this. It’s 10 years of quicken data, all the financial information, the already organized photos with Meta data, the bathroom scale, and access to features in the vehicle and it never ends.)

Terrible Redesign!
Sat Dec 17 2022 Widgie13

Wow…Talk about taking an amazing app and completely destroying one of the main purposes for using an Apple TV, Up Next. Now, you are bombarded with Apple TV+ shows trying to get you to buy or watch them. The Up Next feature (which was the best part of having an Apple TV) is now a shell of what it once was and is no longer a focus for the user. Instead, you are now offered a small thumbnail of your Up Next carousel in the top 1/3 of the screen, with the lower 2/3 being advertisements for Apple TV+ shows. You no longer get any previews or artwork for Up Next, just that little square box. This terrible change by whomever approved this disaster actually has me questioning if it’s now even worth to have the Apple TV since features are being taken away. Almost all TV’s today are smart and have the Apple TV+ app, so the worth of the Apple TV is pretty moot if they remove or no longe care about one of the main reasons for having it. Instead of continuing to provide an amazing customer experience, Apple has opted to force you to see what they want you to see, and when, for their own personal gain. I’m not sure who this redesign is for, but Apple TV owners don’t buy an Apple TV for the TV+ app, they buy an Apple TV because it is the only product that provides you a unified experience and watch list that is continuously updated. Apple called it Up Next, and it was amazing before greed took over.

Without a doubt, the worst experience any streaming service has ever provided.
Thu Jun 22 2023 Thee Schwody

I can’t believe Apple has released something in this state. I paid for the monthly service, I attempted to watch the show on my tv, constantly buffering and not a single other app has issues (I have gigabit internet). The tv app changes my picture settings every time I turn it on to dark for some reason (how and why is this happening?!), constantly glitching for microseconds, which doesn’t sound like much but anytime there is music, the beat is all over the place and it is infuriating. I switched to watching via my Roku, and it’s more of the same. The absolute only way I can get any video to play properly is to play it on my phone via Airplay. I have reset my router, reset my tv and Roku, I even cleared the cache on my tv. To no avail. As soon as my tv show is done I am canceling this service instantly. I have used an iPhone for over a decade and paid a bit extra because it just worked and was always a smooth experience. This has been the worst experience out of any streaming service I have ever tried. I currently have 5 other streaming services I utilize and that’s not even including the free ones, which unfortunately, blow AppleTV+ out of the water, from a technical side and more importantly, the user experience. The absolute atrocious UX is actually so bad, I’m not even mad, I’m just disappointed. Do better Apple.

MLS Season Pass destroys the joy of watching soccer
Sat Mar 25 2023 AleeCC27

The only way that you can watch a game on MLS Season Pass is if you watch it live and never have to pause for prolonged periods of time, but live is hardly predictable. If you ever leave and have to come back it restarts the game from the beginning, not from where you were. Then if you were unlucky enough to not get back to the game before it finished you have the same problem as those who weren’t able to catch the game at all. That problem is not having the final score plastered all over the place before you have even watched the game. The whole point is to watch the game to find out the score not the other way around. An easy fix would be to give those fans that don’t want spoilers a settings option when they pick their favorite team so that the joy of the game is maintained. Also for the away coverage having to hear the announcers for the other team when they are so ardently only talking about their team and not making it a nationwide coverage, which is what it has ended up becoming, is not enjoyable. I was so excited when Apple got this contract, but have been gravely disappointed. The games are unwatchable. I really hope that Apple is able to correct these things so that I am able to enjoy the games that I am unable to attend.
